There’s no doubt about it – operating a small business can be stressful. This may be troubling since so many entrepreneurs start their businesses to get away from the stress of working for someone else. Because of this, you may not be prepared for the stress, and that just makes it worse.

Why is it so stressful to start and operate a small business?

There can be many reasons.

If you are working your small business part-time while you are still working your regular job full-time, you are really working two jobs. The pressure of trying to do a good job at work, get your own business off to a solid start, and maintain your relationships with family and friends can be overwhelming.

If you have transitioned to running your business full time, there are ongoing pressures related to sales, cash flow, time management, and simply getting everything done.

If you have employees, the added issues related to managing employees contribute even more stress to your life.

Fortunately, small businesses have been around a long time, and the many entrepreneurs who have come before you know dozens of ways you can keep the stress level down and your work quality up.

Here are a few:

1. Keep your priorities straight. When you are excited about building or running your business, it’s very easy to get caught up in work and forget about what is really important in your life – family, friends, faith (you determine the order of importance). The better you keep your priorities in order, the more easily you’ll be able to manage the stress associated with your business. Yes, it’s that simple. Take some time right now to think about what is really important to you. Reorganize your schedule to reflect your commitment to those things at the top of the list.

2. Get plenty of sleep. Many small business owners will start early and work late, then try to have a family life before falling into bed for four hours or so and doing it all again. This is ultimately counterproductive. A tired entrepreneur is less smart, less effective, less quick on his feet, and less creative. Get more sleep, and you’ll find you actually get more done. Sleep is also vital to your health. Be very careful before you skimp too much in this area.

3. Learn time management skills. There are many books and websites that can help you develop excellent time management skills. You can start managing your time effectively by simply making lists every day, and keeping a time diary noting everything you do in a week and how long it takes. Go over this diary and find the things you can eliminate. Then eliminate them from your daily life one at a time.

4. Learn to delegate. Entrepreneurs are do-it-yourself people. However, you need to accept that you can’t do everything for yourself. Find vendors or subcontractors who can help with some tasks at a reasonable cost. If you have the resources to hire an assistant or other employees, delegate tasks to them. Spot-check what they’re doing if you must, but let go of a little of that control. Delegating authority is one of the most important executive skills, and you need to learn that anyway.

5. Start your day right. Start your day with some personal reflection or inspirational reading, not checking email. Then, prioritize your tasks for the day and address critical issues. Spend about 30 minutes each day centering yourself and preparing for your day. While it may seem like a waste of time at first, you’ll find that not only are you more productive and focused, but you will be better equipped to handle the stress that appears in your life.

6. Focus on the positive and what you have accomplished. If you do nothing but focus on what you don’t have and how much you have not accomplished, your stress level will rise dramatically. Be positive. There is some truth to the statement, “What you think about, you bring about,” so keep your mind focused on positive things.

7. Don’t neglect your physical health. Stay physically active. Get regular check-ups. Eat right. Not only does exercise relieve stress, but if you get so run down that your health suffers and you can’t work, you will experience even more stress.

8. Take some time off. All work and no play is a recipe for disaster. Unfortunately, entrepreneurs typically take pride in how hard working they are, so taking time off is often viewed as a weakness, rather than a positive thing. The truth is that the more tired and stressed you become, the less productive you are, no matter how many hours you “work.”

9. Finally, look for the joy and sense of accomplishment in your business. If you find that your business is only bringing you heartache and no satisfaction, it’s time to change businesses. If you can’t make an immediate change, start making a plan for a change. Simply making a plan and taking some action to get started with implementing that plan will make a big difference in helping to decrease your stress level.

Even though operating a small business is a lot of work, it doesn’t have be excessively stressful.

The United Kingdom has embraced the return of the ‘long hours culture’. Over 3 million people have begun working over a 48 hour week. The number of people working long hours increased at a faster rate over the last year than the decline in excessive working between 1998 and 2006. The recent increase in working hours could be the result of the challenging economic climate, which has made employers more reluctant to recruit new staff, leading to existing employees having to work harder.

After slow but steady progress over the last decade, long working hours are making their way back into Britain’s workplaces. Employees across the UK already work the longest hours in Western Europe with the least amount of public holidays. The recent increase will mean lower productivity, more stress and less time to have a life outside the office with friends and family.

This is supported by a recent survey commissioned by Beefeater Restaurants, which reveals that 70.6% of Britons don’t feel they have a positive work/life balance. Work-life balance is achieved when an individual’s right to a fulfilled life inside and outside paid work is accepted and respected as the norm, to the mutual benefit of the individual, business and society. The survey, carried out by NEMS Market Research, shows that, as a nation, Britons don’t feel they spend enough time with their families and friends. The results reveal that, even in a culture which claims to prioritise a healthy work/life balance, British companies are falling short in their efforts.

A third (33.1%) of full-time workers surveyed didn’t feel they spent enough time with their family and friends and cited a busy job and work pressure (83.8%) as the main obstacle. When questioned on the impact this had on their lives, more than a third of full-time workers (34.6%) felt that life was passing them by without enjoyment.

Working long hours also comes with a health warning. There is sufficient evidence for us to be concerned about the potentially negative effects of working long hours on physical health. The strongest evidence probably concerns the links with cardiovascular disorder.

Stress is often the outcome of a work/life imbalance. According to a survey conducted by the National Life Insurance Co., four out of ten employees state that their jobs are ‘very’ or ‘extremely’ stressful. It is clear that problems caused by stress have become a major concern to both employers and employees.

Symptoms of stress are manifested both physiologically and psychologically. Persistent stress can result in cardiovascular disease, sexual health problems, a weaker immune system and frequent headaches, stiff muscles, or backache. It can also result in poor coping skills, irritability, jumpiness, insecurity, exhaustion, and difficulty concentrating. Stress may also perpetuate or lead to binge eating, smoking, and alcohol consumption.

A survey conducted by Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank found that 44 per cent of workers in the United Kingdom take off fewer days of holiday than they are entitled to. Furthermore, 77 per cent admitted to keeping in touch with work, via email for example, while they are on holiday trying to relax.

One way of improving employees work/life balance is to ensure that they are able to use all of their holiday allocation effectively throughout the year. If employees were to take holidays throughout the year then it is suggested that employers would reap the benefits of increased productivity, improved recruitment and retention, lower rates of absenteeism, plus a more motivated, satisfied and equitable workforce.

A corporate wellness program in the workplace ought to be created to help manage an worker’s health care needs as well as ensure that work goals are healthful and balanced.

A employee health promotion program can’t cure an illness as troublesome as Lupus, but it may assist the employee to better manage the stress and physical needs that might go with such an condition. Many females who suffer from premenstrual headaches frequently find themselves switching from one type of birth control medication to another, but often times, a corporate health promotion program can help identify methods to better manage such headaches without modifying prescription medication.

Health and wellness products are not ordinarily promoted in a worksite wellness initiative, although they are not discouraged. Corporate wellness initiatives are most frequently used to help staff members identify simple ways to improve their health and well-being , through improving eating habits and adding regular exercise.

A qualitycorporate health promotion program will also tailor individual activities, diets or recommendations to each person depending on their own specific requirements. The activity level for a personal recovering from a knee replacement surgery will be considerably different than the routine for a normal healthy person. Corporate health promotion will be unique.

Many companies discover that making available an occasional worksite massage is enough to promote an excellent spirit of workmanship in the workplace . It’s indisputable that a massage is refreshing, but research studies have found that a good deep tissue massage generally promotes good circulation, increased brain activity and improves alertness for a few hours, all excellent factors in the workplace .

This kind of workplace health promotion initiative is designed to meet the needs of each staff member individually, while promoting a healthy cohesive work unit in each corporation . A workplace health promotion initiative is not designed as a alternative for regular medical checkups, but in addition to the existing relationship between a personal and their physician .

Three of the most presenting medical ailments facing individuals in the workforce today are obesity, tobacco use and stress. With the encouragement and support from a employee health promotion program these issues can easily be addressed.

Obesity is very prevalent and is related to so many other diseases . The worksite cafeteria is a wonderful place to provide heart healthy , low-fat meals. In addition to nutrition, exercising on a regular basis will improve health and energy levels. Worksite gym and select exercise classes are a superb way to promote regular physical activity with a group of encouraging colleague s.

Tobacco is highly addictive. A worksite health promotion program can make available ways to break the addictive cycle of tobacco use by offering alternative ways to reduce stress or by replacing unhealthful habits with new healthier activities. Again, when any activity is done as a group, it can make the whole process easier and psychologically it can make the participant feel more accountable to the group.

Stress is a prominent part of most worksites. Being able to cope with the day-to-day demands in a more healthy way will mitigate the self-induced stress. Exercise, discussion and simple relaxation techniques can help diffuse workplace stress.

Having a employee health promotion program in place is the most important task. Each employee health promotion program will look different depending on the organization, the worksite and its staff members . Promoting health and making available a balanced work environment are important to an overall successful corporation .

A corporate wellness program isn’t a surefire method to get all workers on the same page as far as their health and well-being , but it’s a step in the right direction. When more and more businesses promote wellness in the workplace it becomes the norm and workers are more likely to follow suit by taking responsibility for their own health and well-being by making good long-term options .

Whether you plan to exhibit once a year or every week, you may be using all sorts of trade show displays. You may own display stands of all shapes and sizes or you may opt to rent the display stands you require as the need arises. If you are brand new at exhibiting at trade shows or other events, you may be curious about all the different options that are available to you.

When deciding what type of trade show displays to use, there are many things to consider. Some of the factors to think about include:
- What is your goal for the outcome of the trade show?
- How will your exhibit or booth help achieve this objective?
- What type of space will you reserve at the show?
- What size events will you participate and what will the participants (audience) be like?
- How many events do you anticipate participating in on a regular basis?
- How will your exhibition materials be transported to and from trade shows?
- How much money are you actually willing to spend?

If your answers to these questions bring you to the conclusion that you need an inexpensive, easy to transport option that will fit into limited spaces, one of the smaller, more cost effective options for displays is the table top trade show display.

Basic Description

A table top trade show display is basically a display that stands on a table. Table top trade show displays typically have three panels to which you can attach images, graphics or headlines and text by using Velcro. Using Velcro to attach these allows you to change and update the graphics or text you use on an ‘as needed’ basis. There are many advantages to using table top displays for presentation at trade shows or other events. There are also some disadvantages, such as not having enough space to exhibit actual product (or a wide enough variety of product to demonstrate the breadth of your line).

More Inexpensive

If you are just getting started in your business or in trade show marketing in general, you may be looking for some ways to cut your costs. Table top trade show displays, whether they are purchased or rented from a trade show supply service, may meet your needs in this regard. Table top trade show displays tend to be more inexpensive than standing displays or modular displays.
Table top trade show displays tend to be much smaller than all-out booths and thus use less material. Because of this, it is cheaper to produce and acquire a table top display than it is to produce and/or acquire a more elaborate setup. In addition to this, a table top trade show display is more inexpensive in that it requires less space, which means you PAY for less space. Table top trade show displays are also more inexpensive to transport.

Size Matters

If you plan to exhibit often and mostly locally, you will want a trade show display that you can easily transport yourself or at least ship inexpensively on a regional or national basis. If this is your case, then you will want to opt for a trade show or exhibit display that is not only small and easily manageable but also adaptable and lightweight. Table top trade show displays are among the lightest and easiest exhibit displays currently on the market. However, there are other lightweight options that may suit your needs as well. Some of these other lightweight options include:
- Pull-Up Display
- Pop-Up Display
- Panel Display

If you own a small business or practice (selling your services, like an accountant, a therapist, a consultant) and don’t have a website yet, it is not too late. And it doesn’t have to be a big deal.

In this economy, the winners are going to be those who continue to market and promote. If you haven’t gotten around to putting a website up (enough business, referrals, just avoiding), do it now. You are conspicuous by your absence.

You have probably heard horror stories from colleagues about the web designer who flaked on them or paying thousands but getting nothing. Learn from the mistakes of your predecessors and when you do embark on the Internet adventure, seize control of it!

Don’t hire that web guy you met at a networking meeting or have your kid do it for you on college break. If you are serious about making your website an important part of your marketing, you must control it yourself.

There are content management systems (like Web Power Tools and others) that make a website as easy as typing a letter in Word.

Here are the top ten business reasons you should build and maintain your own professional website:

1. It’s Easy To Change – Your business will change. You’ll add a service, you’ll change your tag line. Something. If your web guy is the only one who can change your website holding it hostage (for a fee), you won’t keep it up to date. An out of date website can be worse than no website at all.

2. You’ll Cut Out The Middleman – You are responsible for the content anyway. Why not just do it yourself?

3. Investment – It’s a lot cheaper. Even if you get a freelance person to do it for the same price as a template, you’ll have to pay again and again when you want to touch your site.

4. It’s The Right Amount of Website – The reality of a business website is that it needs to be good enough to get the job done! Not over-the-top with music and animation. Your clients want the appropriate information presented clearly and you don’t need a designer to do that.

5. Speed – You can do it quickly. In just an hour or two. Start with just one or two pages and then as you develop more content, you can add it.

6. Getting Found – Search engines like sites with changing content. If you have to pay your web guy every time you want to add a new event or change a link to an upcoming teleclass, you won’t do it and then your search rankings will go down.

7. Test – If you control your website, you can use it to test new ideas and offerings. A summer special, a discount offer. Just put it up and see what happens.

8. Course-Correct As Needed – When you build your own website, you can easily track the traffic and statistics patterns, seeing where your visitors were referred from, what pages they visited, how long they stayed. This is meaty information you can really learn from.

9. Don’t Reinvent The Wheel – Working with a templated system gives you straightforward guidelines on best practices and what pages and content to develop so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel.

10. End Procrastination – You can finally cross “build a website” off your list!

The Internet is here to stay and your business needs to get on board. Control your web marketing yourself and see how effective it can be!

The hardness and abrasiveness of diamonds makes them ideal for industrial use. That is why aside from the traditional and popular use of diamonds in jewelry, they are also used now in creating and modifying industrial equipment and machineries. Diamond drill bits are the most useful and sought after cutting tools used in almost all industries.

To begin with, drill bits are tools that are primarily used to produce circular-shaped holes. The bits are held in place in a tool known as a drill. The drill rotates the bits and facilitates an axial force that is helpful and facilitative in creating a hole. Many different types of drills can be found across the market, made of various materials and for various purposes. Diamond drill bits are among them.

Industries recognize and value the uses and advantages of diamond drill bits. Not all types of drill bits can very well and easily produce the smooth and perfect circular shaped holes produced by diamond drill bits. That is why no matter how expensive the equipment is, companies and industrial bodies make sure they allot sufficient capital for the investment.

The structure of diamond drill bits

What makes diamond drill bits so useful and effective? To begin with, such equipment is made to a different design. The drill bits are made of especially crafted and cut diamond tips that are designed and used to grind into extremely solid, hard and tough materials. What else can cut hard surfaces but the hardest and most abrasive object on the planet?

Diamond drill bits are bonded, having diamonds securely attached to the very edges of the tips of the drilling bits. The bondage uses a reliable and proven electroplate bonding process. In general, diamond drill bits are slow-speed and are fairly inexpensive, unlike what most people would think because of the diamond component. However, some companies complain that the price tags are still costly enough to serve as an impediment to owning one.

The function

When in use, the diamond drill bits get into the surfaces of hard objects and materials. The drilling action is noticeably faster and less noisy, although experts advise people to use the equipment at a controlled pace. In no time, the shaped hole will be created. Productivity is maintained and even bolstered as the time saved for producing the holes can then be used to do other necessary tasks.

However, diamond drill bits are not without limitations. Particularly, the drilling machines are not to be used on certain metals, masonry and concrete surfaces. There is also a need to observe the proper drilling speed. Users should also watch for sufficient and prescribed water lubrication.

The life span

Another concern when buying and using diamond drill bits is the life span. Basically, such equipment’s life expectancy depends on the abrasiveness, hardness and even the thickness of the materials usually drilled. Of course, when the drill bit is used in harsher and more tenuous conditions, its life span generally decreases.

There is also a need to watch out for the specific drilling techniques that are used. As mentioned, users should take note of the pressure applied, the drilling speed, and the lubrication provided when using diamond drill bits. As always, proper and careful use can help extend the life span.

The diamonds in the drill bits are not actually wearing out, but the machine itself and the bondage of the diamond components. Thus, some companies are mindful and watchful when diamond drill bits wear off as some employees might be interested on the diamonds. The possibility of sabotage on such instances is not a distant possibility and should be a cause for concern.

Here are 3 keys to saving yourself an enormous amount of time and expense as you prepare to start your own business.

1- Don’t Spend a Lot on Marketing at First. This may sound like a crazy notion, but don’t spend a lot on marketing until you’re clear about your business. This sounds crazy because, if you’re starting your own business, then you should know exactly what your business is about. But part of starting your own business is running into brick walls and changing directions when necessary. What this amounts to is the fact that your business will look very different one year out than it did on your first day. So don’t spend a ridiculous amount of money on marketing until you’ve hit those brick walls and are very clear about the direction you’re heading.

There are some things you can spend money on at first. These things are critical items that don’t cost much money. These things include business cards and brochures. Try printing your own business cards on your computer instead of paying a printing company to do it for you. You can also create a text logo rather than a full color graphic, at least for the first year. Or you can get a starving graphic design student to create a logo for you on the cheap. Rather than spending a fortune on your website, purchase a domain name and start a blog. Later, when you’re clear about your vision, you will be able to work effectively with a web designer to get exactly what you want.

2- Sell Quickly. When you first start out, you need the shortest sales cycle possible. Make sure that at least one of your products or services costs between $100 and $300. This gives prospective customers the option to check you out and see what you have to offer. The risk is minimized for both of you. Additionally, avoid the trend of not publishing your prices online. Let potential customers know at the beginning what your products or services are going to run them. When you’re ready to offer bigger-ticket items, those prices can be negotiated, but let customers know what to expect right away at the beginning.

Another important thing you can do is keep track of your processes as you go along. Resist the temptation to “go with the flow” as each new project comes along. Every time a client asks you about a new project, you should have a clear idea about the steps it will require and the time it will take. This will ensure that you can set your prices early and accurately.

Finally, make sure that you have at least one product or service that you’re willing to sell for a low amount or even give away. Ideally this is something you can upsell, or a product that will cause your customers to refer others to your business.

3- Be Technologically Proficient. It’s no surprise that fluency in technology goes a long way toward a successful business. But you really can’t overestimate the importance of technological proficiency. Start by taking a class in any programming language. This will make it easier for you to communicate with programmers and understand the limits of available software. It will also help you get over a potential fear of technology that can limit you immensely.

You can also make a big difference by making small moves. Update one page of your website every week instead of tackling the whole thing at one time. Use electronic billing rather than waiting until you have the resources to automate your receivables and payables.

You’ll find that, as your business grows, hindsight will tell you how you should have done things differently. But if you follow these three steps, you’ll start out ahead of the curve and see profits more quickly.

Rising Gas prices Drive HR Departments Strategy.

HR departments must prepare themselves for rising gas prices and their effect on employee retention. As of today April 23, 2008, gas prices in California are over $4.00 a gallon and the summer driving season has not kicked in yet, when typically gas prices go even higher because of vacationers. A spokesperson for AAA has said that a national average price of $4 per gallon is possible for later this summer. Prospects of gas-price relief in the longer term are bleak; petroleum production is not increasing while global demand, largely driven by the expanding economies of China and India, is soaring.

The impact of high gas prices is really starting to take effect. Many people have to stretch their budgets to pay for basic necessities because filling up the car can cost upwards of $50, and for SUV owners the cost can soar to over $70. As gas prices continue to increase many workers will face having to change their mode of transportation, taking public transit or carpooling where possible. But in many towns and cities across the USA the public transit system is just not an option for the overwhelming majority of the population.

With the cost of transportation skyrocketing, it won’t be long before some employees start asking if they can work from home a day or two a week. HR departments need to be proactive and start investigating telework possibilities as soon as possible to give some relief to their employees. If employees are allowed to work from home two or three days a week that would greatly reduce the stress in their lives and on their wallets. This will make for a happier more productive workforce and a much more loyal one. Employees will be very grateful that their company is looking out for them during this very difficult time.

Obviously not all jobs are capable of being done remotely, but Rep. Frank Wolf of the 10th District of Virginia has stated that “Nearly 20 million Americans telework today, and according to experts, at least 40 percent of American jobs are compatible with telework”.

Where do I look for information?
There are many Internet sites with useful information on how to start implementing a telework program at your company. Telework.gov is the official website of the Federal Government’s telework program. Other organization that support and promote telework are The Telework Coalition and Telework Exchange .

There are many local organizations also, so be sure to check in your area. For example Telework Tampa Bay is a program of the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council and Bay Area Commuter Services.

What should a telework policy contain?
HR professionals will need to consider which jobs are suitable for teleworking, and then write a policy to describe how the telework program will be implemented in the company.

The telework policy is critical for setting up a successful telework program! This document is necessary to set up the expectations on behalf of the employees and employer. A detailed policy that states the expectations and responsibilities of both parties will help to ensure a successful program.

You can find many telework policies and sample policies on the web and use them as templates. For example HR-guide.com, has a sample telework policy and Eastern Oregon University has their telework policy online.

Most policies have an introduction which states what telework is and why it is being implemented, an eligibility section that states which employees may be eligible and how authority for telework is granted. Then follows the actual agreement section which states responsibilities of the employee and employer.

Typical employee responsibilities:
• Availability during specified hours
• Condition of equipment
• Quality of work

Employer responsibilities:
• Providing equipment
• Office supplies

Typically the employee would fill out an application to request telework, and if granted sign an agreement.

Application would contain:
• Employee info
• Location of telework
• Possibly telework statistics, miles saved, gallons of gas saved, time saved.
• Telework schedule when the employee would be available
• Equipment needed

Won’t that hurt our communication?
Fortunately now we live in the age of the Internet. Many employees who use computers for their main tasks can work at home with minimal cost. Many homes already have broadband access to the Internet (DSL, cable, Fios, satellite). There are many software tools that can help keep the communication flowing between your employees. Instant messaging programs are provided by AOL, MSN and Yahoo. Video conferencing services are also available. Most businesses have email, and of course there are always cell phones, blackberries and other devices. There are also many Internet applications that allow you to communicate with your employees. These can range from online timesheet software to policy distribution software, allowing for 24/7 world wide access.

Who else is doing this?
There is much support for this effort from the Federal and local governments and many of our representatives. In Washington DC and surrounding areas like Loudoun County, VA local governments are pushing hard for telework partially due to the incredible traffic conditions that have turned “rush hour” into “crawling hours”. Many large companies are also reaping big benefits from telework programs including Cisco, Verizon, AT&T and many more.

There are many case studies that have been done:
Commuter Challenge is a non-profit organization that has been fostering public/private partnerships to find solutions to King County, WA (Seattle) transportation issues for over 15 years.

At UC-Berkeley’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science they have a case study on telecommuting. The Telework Consortium Inc. also has a great video on YouTube.

What are the other benefits?
“The best part of telework is that it improves the quality of life for all,” Wolf wrote. “Telework reduces traffic congestion and air pollution. It reduces gas consumption and our dependency on foreign oil. Telework is good for families — working parents have flexibility to meet everyday demands. Telework provides people with disabilities greater job opportunities. Telework helps fill our nation’s labor market shortage. It is also a good way for retirees to pick up part-time work.” Rep. Frank Wolf 10th District of Virginia

Employers benefit too! Real estate costs can be reduced and employee morale increases which directly impacts their retention, customer service, and productivity. Happy employees tend to reflect their happiness and are able to concentrate on work not being distracted by worries.

Anyone can measure monthly gasoline savings with Online Employment Systems Gas Savings Calculator.

Where else can it work?
Telework not only works in congested urban areas like Washington, DC and the surrounding suburbs, but it can also work in rural areas as well. Broadband connections are reaching out into the rural communities now so it will make teleworking a possibility. If you live in a rural area you may have to drive 50 or more miles to work each day. The time spent on the road and the price of gas are major factors in favor of teleworking.

What is the downside to telework?
Management may feel lack of control. A good policy, good communication tools and setting clear performance goals can go a long way to making management feel more comfortable. Remember that in your telework policy it should state the expectations of the employer. These should include work hours the employee needs to be available, schedules for when work products are due and other guidelines to help both employee and employer understand what is expected.

Employees may feel out of the loop. Good communication tools can help the employees feel more engaged and if workers telework for a couple days a week this will probably not be an issue.

Employers need to remember the following:
Just because your employee works from home does not mean:
• They are available 24/7 (unless you have previously stated such in your telework policy)
• They are goofing off just because you can’t see them working.

Employees need to remember the following:
• Working at home does not necessarily mean working without distractions. There is a whole new set of distractions (TV, phone, refrigerator, neighbors).
• You need to set boundaries between private life and work life. Telework does not necessarily mean work whenever you want. Depending on your job you may be required to be available within the core hours set up by your company.
• If you have dependents at home you should arrange for help to care for them while you are working.

Conclusion:
The price of gas is really only the latest reason for companies to look at instituting a telework program. If we were all driving electric cars tomorrow, there would still be huge traffic congestion which translates into longer, more frustrating commuting times which takes time away from families and can make for more stressful and annoyed employees. Employers would still be paying high rent and maintenance costs on buildings.

There are three main points to help make a telework program a success.
• Making a telework program a viable useful program will take buy-in from upper management and employees alike.
• A well written policy that states expectations and responsibilities on both parties will be major factor in making your telework program a success.
• Current communication technology, the Internet and telework software is making telework a very real alternative.

Medical transcription is a very popular option for working at home. Landing that first job after training can be tough, but it’s legitimate work once you get going.

But that’s the challenge. Getting things going.

The first thing you need to understand about medical transcription is that you need training at the very least, and quite possibly some experience, before you can find that transcription job from home. Most employers will not train you on the job. Due to the sensitive nature of this field, they need people who are prepared to work and dedicated to their jobs.

Before you sign up with any online medical transcription school, you need to research them. You want to ensure that you have a good shot at actually landing a job afterward. Choose a poor quality school and you are less likely to land any job at all.

There are three schools that are commonly recommended by just about any MT discussion board. They are The Andrews School, M-Tec and CareerStep. The first two are considered by far to be the best, but many employers do approve of CareerStep as well. It’s also more affordable than the other two, which is a consideration for many potential students.

That good reputation is key to getting a job in this industry. Without it you are going to struggle to find work. Good schools have a solid reputation, and many of them use the HPI training program. They may also offer job placement assistance.

Do not expect to pay just a few hundred dollars for training. Quality training is a bit pricey, and good programs run at least $1000 and often over $2000. This is not a cheap deal.

But what about community colleges, you may ask? Some do indeed have good programs for less, but they generally lack the reputation that helps you to land that ever so hard to find first job. Talk to the school in detail about their placement rate after training if this is the option you would prefer to pursue.

Watch out for companies that claim to give you training with no experience that will lead to a job. There is one company in particular which changes names regularly, which emphasizes its “Christian” character, yet is nothing more than a scam. They require students to purchase software, and then you never get good enough to get paid. The name change can make them hard to identify, but the routine stays more or less the same.

When it comes time to look for actual work, many employers will consider you to be an independent contractor rather than an employee. This is an important difference both at tax time and in how you get your equipment. You may be expected to provide your own, although some companies may send it to you.

As with any work at home job, employers should not expect you to pay for the privilege of applying to work for them. No fees to show that you’re serious, for example. They should be clear about how you will get paid. In most cases you will be paid on production rather than hourly, typically a set rate per line. One line is often 65-75 characters in length.

As with any work at home opportunity, medical transcription scams are out there. But if you are careful and do your research, you can avoid these and enjoy a fruitful career.

The cost of doing business is rising, and so is the cost of conducting business meetings. With staff and clients that could be literally on the other side of the planet, trying to meet face-to-face can become a very expensive venture. Think about travel. Airfares aren’t going down, even for those who fly economy class. The cost of fuel is even making driving to a meeting cost prohibitive.

In addition to the travel cost, there is accommodation, transportation, food, entertainment, etc. to pay for. The list of expenses could go on and on. Depending on the size of the meeting, you may have to reserve a special facility. And what about taking all the participants out for lunch or dinner? And don’t forget about lost productivity. If your staff is on an airplane or in a car, they’re probably not getting all that much work done. You get the idea. Face-to-face business meetings can get real pricey, real fast!

The answer whose time has come, is conducting your meetings online – even the crucial ones. Online meeting services have evolved to be able to help you conduct a real, live, professional and highly productive meeting online from your office. Your staff and clients can be in the comfort of their own offices. And by using audio and video technology, the meeting can take place in real time with real results, at a tiny fraction of the cost of having a meeting in the traditional manner.

What else can online meeting services do for you and your business? First, you can conduct virtually any type of business meeting online. Training, team-building, negotiating, brainstorming, document reviews, product launch, meetings – anything!

Online meeting services offer both VOIP audio and video services so that you can be connected both by voice and sight. Media tools such as a white board can be used for presentations, illustrations and information sharing and developing. Programs and documents can be shared, discussed and changed in an instant and the web tour function allows interactive exploration of your site as well as competitors, suppliers or clients.

All of this can be accomplished with each participant sitting as his or her own desk rather than at your site. And the cost of using an online meeting service is nominal. The session can be recorded thus allowing it to be replayed by uploading to the web, burnt to DVD or emailed for playback at a later date.

What if you are hiring for a pivotal position in your company? You will probably have applicants from across the country, maybe all over the world. Before you go to the expense of flying them in for an interview, spend some time with him or her via an online meeting. You can learn a lot about each candidate this way, and save your company time and money.

As you work to build your business, you want to do all you can to conduct business in a professional, productive and smart manner. Everyone knows that spending money needlessly is not looked upon as being professional, productive or smart. Well-respected business managers know that using their company’s resources wisely leads to increased business health and progress.

When you are considering your options for conducting business meetings, look to online meeting services to help you have the most productive and cost-effective meetings with both staff and clients.
